Everyone has a room inside of them.
In order to go to sleep L—- must close many doors. But there are doors and there are doors. So many of them are open! How did they become that way? Well, some of them are open because of INTRUDERS. L—- does not bother to search them out. They could be hiding anywhere! All that is left to do at this point is to lock the door (top and bottom) and hope that that will keep out all but the most resourceful intruders. Some of them are open because of GUESTS. But how rude of them not to shut the door behind them! Why does she invite ill-bred guests into her room? Well, the truth of the matter is that only L—– can close the doors, and sometimes she wants to leave the door open to let in the breeze. Other times she worries that the guests will think her presumptuous for closing the door. Then there are the times when she simply forgets. Some of the doors
are open because of LEAVE-TAKINGS. And I suppose she doesn’t worry about theft while she’s away! Why should she? There are still the intruders. Where does she go? We cannot say. All we know is that there are times when she returns with armfuls of knicknacks, hats, mallards, cups, doorstops. Gifts for guests, hiding-places for intruders. She herself does not see the room as a hiding place, but in order to go to sleep she must close all the doors.
